Change Date and Time Format in WordPress

This article explains how to change date and time format in WordPress using it's built-in function.

WordPress comes with built-in functions that allow users as well as developers to format date and time. The date and time format are based on alphabetic characters that represent a time format. In this article, we will guide you on how to change the date and time format in WordPress.

Go to 'Settings > General' page in the WordPress admin area and scroll down to the timezone section as shown below.

Here, you will find some built-in options that you can choose from by clicking on the radio button, or you can enter your own custom format as shown above.

You can see a full list of format characters here. Some examples of commonly used date and time format characters can be found below.

  1. M d, Y – will output – Nov 06, 2014
  2. d M, Y – will output – 06 Nov, 2014
  3. F jS, Y – will output – November 6th, 2014
  4. l, F jS, Y – will output – Thursday, November 6th, 2014
  5. H:i:s – will output – 21:26:12

You can try different formats in the custom box for both date and time settings. After you enter the format, WordPress will show you a preview of what your date or time will look like.

Once you are done with save your settings by clicking the 'Save Changes' button located at the bottom of the page as shown in Figure 1. It will use this format throughout your website unless your theme has pre-defined the format.
