Install New Themes in WordPress

WordPress by default currently comes with three themes; the default Twenty Fifteen theme, and previous defaults Twenty Fourteen theme and Twenty Thirteen theme. In this article we will guide you how to find and install a theme for your WordPress website.

Installing a Theme using WordPress Admin Theme Search

  1. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard. You will see your main menu on the left. Click on "Appearance>Themes" as shown below.

  3. Here, you will see all the themes that have been currently installed in your application. To add a new free WordPress theme from the WordPress themes directory click on the "Add New Theme" as shown below.

  5. On the next screen, you will have the ability to select from "Featured", "Popular","Latest" ,"Favorites" and "Toolset" WordPress themes. You can also search for a specific theme using the search bar, or search for themes with specific features by clicking the "Feature Filter" button as shown below.

  7. Based on your search, you will see a single theme or a list of themes that met your criteria.
  8. Once you choose a theme that you like, simply hover your mouse on top of the image of the theme. This will reveal the "Preview" and the "Install" buttons as shown below. Click on the "Install" button.

  10. WordPress will now install your theme and show you a success message along with the link to activate or live preview as shown below. Click Activate to immediately make your website start using this theme.

  12. You can now go to the front end of your website and see the newly activated theme in action.
  13. Note: Depending on the theme, it may add additional settings options that you may need to configure either through the theme customizer or through a separate options panel that will appear on your WordPress Dashboard.

Installing a Theme by using Upload Method from WordPress Admin

If you have already purchased a theme, and would like to install it on your WordPress website, follow the steps as mentioned below.

  1. Start by downloading the .zip file of the theme that you purchased from a commercial theme provider.
  2. Click on "Appearance>Themes" as shown below.

  4. Here, you will see all the themes that have been currently installed in your application. To add a new free WordPress theme from the WordPress themes directory click on the "Add New Theme" as shown below.

  6. On the next screen, click on the "Upload Theme" button at the top as shown below.

  8. You will then be prompted to choose the zip file that you downloaded earlier. Click on the "Choose File" button and select the file from your computer. Once the file is uploaded, the "Install Now" button will become active. Click on the "Install Now " button as shown below.

  9. Once your theme is installed, you will see a success message along with the link to activate and preview the theme as shown below. Click "Activate" to immediately make your website start using this theme.
